With the intense humidity and scorching temperatures hitting Sydney and around all around Australia this summer, it's the perfect time to revisit some essential aftercare tips for your eyelash extensions. The warmer weather can affect your lashes, so a little extra TLC will ensure they last longer and stay looking fabulous.
As always, proper aftercare is essential to maintain your lash extensions and ensure good retention. However, there are a few extra precautions to consider during the summer months to help prolong the life of your lashes.
Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind for those hot summer days:
- Wash lashes after every swim
- Use oil-free sunscreen
- Avoid excessive heat
- Schedule infills more frequently
- Avoid applying spray tan directly to your face
1. Keep Lashes Dry for 24 Hours
After your eyelash application, we recommend keeping your lashes dry for at least 24 hours. This means avoiding heat, sweat, and steam, as well as products like shampoo and oily face creams. Some salons may have different aftercare guidelines, but keeping your lashes away from moisture during this period is key to ensuring proper bonding and longevity. Plus, avoiding the temptation to touch your fresh lashes helps them stay perfect longer!
2. Say No to Oil
Your eyelash extensions really don't like oil – it’s one of their biggest enemies. Oil can break down the adhesive, making infills difficult and causing the extensions to fall off prematurely. Micellar water, often thought to be a gentle makeup remover, contains oil-based ingredients and should be avoided.
We know it’s tempting, but please trust us when we say: Don’t use micellar water! For safe makeup removal, opt for an oil-free remover like our Lash Foam Cleanser.
It's gentle yet effective and won’t interfere with your lash retention. Also, steer clear of waterproof makeup and gel/pot eyeliners – these can be particularly hard to remove and degrade the adhesive over time.
3. Wash Lashes After Every Swim
Who doesn’t love a refreshing swim on a hot summer day? It’s the perfect way to cool off and enjoy the sunshine! However, swimming in saltwater, chlorinated pools, or even just dunking your head can lead to salt crystals building up on your lashes, which can cause them to become crusty and may even lead to premature lash loss.
Remind your clients to always wash their lashes after every swim. Simply rinse the lashes with clean water and gently pat them dry to remove any excess moisture. This is the ideal opportunity to recommend our Lash Foam Cleanser, which is perfect for keeping lashes clean, fresh, and free from any damaging residue!
With the rising temperatures, our bodies naturally produce more oils and sweat, which can attract dust and debris to your lashes. To keep them fresh and clean all summer, we recommend using our foaming lash cleanser regularly.
When drying your lashes, remind clients to gently pat away excess water with a towel or paper towel, and then fan dry while brushing to return the lashes to their original position. Avoid rubbing the lashes with any material, as this can tug on the extensions and leave behind fibres that may damage the natural lashes. Rubbing too aggressively can cause the extensions to twist or criss-cross in unnatural ways and, over time, even break the natural lash. Ouch! Gentle care is key to keeping both your extensions and natural lashes in top shape.
4. Choose an Oil-Free Sunscreen
While sunscreen is a must in any season, it’s especially important to use an oil-free formula during the summer. Some spray sunscreens can get into your lashes and cause them to stick together, which is a nightmare for your extensions. Look for a sunscreen that’s designed for your face, preferably one that’s lightweight and non-greasy. This will keep your lashes safe while protecting your skin from harmful UV rays.
5. Avoid Strip Lashes
As tempting as it may be to layer some strip lashes on top of your extensions, we strongly advise against it. The glue from strip lashes can leave a residue that’s difficult to remove and often gets stuck between your extensions. Removing this glue often results in pulling out your natural lashes or extensions, causing damage. If you’re craving a fuller look, consider switching to Hybrid or Volume lashes for a more dramatic effect. We love experimenting with different styles to create the perfect lash look for you!
6. Why Do Lash Extensions Last Less in Summer?
It’s not your imagination – your lash extensions might not last as long during the hotter months. This isn’t the case for everyone, but on average, we find that clients get an extra 4-5 days between infills in winter. In summer, your skin tends to produce more oil, which can shorten the lifespan of your extensions. Your lashes may also grow faster, causing them to shed more quickly. If you’re noticing your lashes looking less full in the humidity, ask your lash stylist to shorten the extensions slightly for the summer. Shorter lashes tend to hold up better and create less mess as they grow out.
In steamy, humid weather, the excess oil on your skin can weaken the lash adhesive, meaning you might need infills a little more frequently than in the dry winter months. But don’t worry – regular cleaning and proper aftercare can help extend the life of your lashes, no matter the season.
